What You Need to Know about the Law

Personal injury laws

Hopefully, most of us will never have to seek a lawyer. However, there may come a time when, for whatever reason, when we have need of legal help.

Most people have heard the term lawsuit before, but few understand what it means. A lawsuit is when a person or organization files a legal complaint against another person or organization before a court alleging that their legal rights have been interfered with.

One of the most common types of legal matters are tort cases. The idea behind tort law is that if a party is injured due to the actions or negligence of another then the offending party should compensate the injured party for the harm suffered. Most of the time, these issues can be resolved privately without having to involve the courts. However, sometimes the law does need to intervene when parties are unable to come to an agreement. In the Federal court system alone, there is an average of 512,000 Federal court tort cases a year. About 20% of personal injury lawsuits stem from automobile related accidents. Contrary to popular belief, most of these cases will never actually go before a judge. This is because, most often, the parties settle outside of court.

Divorce is another common type of legal matter that, unfortunately, many people experience in their lives. The divorce statistics speak to just how common divorces are in America. On average, there are between 850,000 to 950,000 divorces every year in the United States. Studies show that the 43% of first marriages end in divorce. Unfortunately, people do not seem to get better at staying married after their first divorce. Divorce statistics show that 60% of second marriages, followed by 73% of third marriages end in divorce.
